Clinic Receives Mental Health Resource League Grant

An $8000 grant from the Mental Health Resource League will help the Family Health Partnership Clinic support nursing care to patients with mental illness.  Kathy Rauch, Volunteer Coordinator, and Darlene Pepke, Clinic Nurse, spoke at the Annual Awards event held at Stage Left Café in Woodstock.

“We are grateful for the support of the League in helping provide needed services to our community,” said Ms. Pepke.  “I started out at the Clinic as a volunteer, then came on staff, and quickly realized the need for increased nursing services.  Our patients often need additional education, follow up and support to keep them healthy.  Sometimes I see the desperation in the eyes of our patients, and that extra support has enabled them to heal.  Now, thanks to the League, we can do more.”

Ms. Rauch noted the similarities between the League, an all volunteer organization, and the Clinic which relies on volunteers for its physician base as well as many supportive functions including clerical work, referral services, and pharmacy management.  The Clinic utilized over 500 volunteers at its Care 4 Breast Cancer race this fall.

The Mental Health Resource League supports community organizations through its two fundraisers, Fair Diddley in May and Fall Diddley in October.  These events draw thousands to the Woodstock Square in spring and to the Boone County Fairgrounds in fall.

The Family Health Partnership Clinic provides health care to the uninsured of McHenry County and relies on community support to provide over 8400 patient visits annually.

Marian Central’s NHS Chapter Hosts

Conference for Middle School Students

Marian Central Catholic High School’s Bishop Lane Chapter of the National Honor Society hosted its second annual RISE UP Leadership Conference on Saturday, December 10, 2011. Members of the chapter welcomed 6th, 7th and 8th grade students invited from Elgin Academy, Montini, St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph, St. Margaret Mary, St. Mary, St. Thomas, and Ss. Peter and Paul. “RISE UP” is an acronym for “Recognizing and Inspiring Students’ Excellence and Undiscovered Potential”, an acronym that summarizes the objective of the conference.

The success of last year’s conference earned the chapter an Outstanding Service Project Award, one of six awards granted last year by the National Council. Marian student ambassadors accepted the award in June in St. Louis at the Star Leaders (Students Taking Active Roles as Leaders) Conference hosted by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. At the STAR Conference, Marian students led by current NHS President Luke Dawson presented a forum explaining the process of planning and organizing a leadership conference for middle school students similar to RISE UP.

This year, NHS members aimed to make the conference bigger and better. Nearly 100 middle school students attended the conference, a substantial increase from sixty students last year. New sessions were added to this year’s schedule. The seven presentations, coordinated by Presentation Director J.P. O’Hagan, aimed to inform and inspire the participants while remaining fun and engaging. The presentations titled What I Wish I Knew Before High School, Give a Little Bit: How to Succeed in Service, What Do You Want Out of Life?: How to Set Goals, and “Unlike” Bullying  were discussion-based and involved interactive games and activities that gave middle school students the opportunity to participate. LEADERSHIP taught students an acronym for the qualities of effective leaders and explained methods to facilitate effective leadership within their schools and community. What Does Smart Look Like?  shattered stereotypes by teaching students that they can be successful in school by giving their best effort and finding the best study methods tailored to their own unique learning styles. Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, based on the book of the same name, gave conference participants keys to success as they progress into their teenage years and young adulthood.

Participants responded positively to the presentations and took home handouts and bookmarks as reminders of what they had learned. Presenters were inspired by students’ reactions and glad to see their weeks of effort realized. Kyle Dionela, leader of the presentation What I Wish I Knew Before High School, said: “Being a presentation leader was an awesome experience. Seeing so many of the kids interested in being future leaders gives me hope for my generation.”

Students also watched skits performed by NHS members that explored themes of prejudice and peer pressure. Conference participants also had the opportunity to perform onstage for each other. They starred in skits about internet safety and bullying. NHS Member Lauren Adams expressed that the skits allowed students to experience real life situations they may encounter later in life and said, “They learned to make the right choices through reenactment.”

The day concluded with a Leadership Bowl led by NHS Chief Operations Officer Mike Fitzpatrick. In this game, representatives from each of the schools tested their knowledge with trivia questions from each of the sessions. Students from the participating schools cheered on their classmates as they buzzed in to score points in the contest, won by Claire Van Der Bosch of St. Margaret Mary.

NHS members were proud of the outcome of the RISE UP Conference. RISE UP Conference Director Casey Doherty said: “Seeing the smiles of the participants showed us the true value of our hard work. Knowing we had made such a profound impact on the lives of these students made the weeks of planning and preparation worth everything.” Marian Central’s National Honor Society is already looking forward to hosting the annual RISE UP Conference next year to continue to develop the leaders of tomorrow.

McHenry County residents have an unprecedented opportunity to participate in a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. Centegra Health System and the American Cancer Society are partnering to recruit men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).

This study will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. Centegra is the first health system in Illinois to be invited to partner with the American Cancer Society for this study. Centegra hopes

to recruit more than 600 participants in McHenry County.

To participate in the study, individuals must first go to www.seeuthere.com/cps3enroll/mchenryil to schedule an enrollment appointment. Limited appointment dates are available. They are:

  • 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at Centegra Hospital-Woodstock

At the appointment, participants will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form; have their waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. The appointment should last about 20 to 30 minutes. Upon completion of this process, the American Cancer Society will send periodic follow-up surveys to update their information and annual newsletters with study updates and results. Periodic follow-up surveys of various lengths will be sent to participants every few years.

For more information or to learn how to become involved with CPS-3, visit Centegra.org, cancer.org/cps3, email cps3@cancer.org, or call toll-free 1-888-604-5888.

Pioneer Center Welcomes New CEO

Pioneer Center for Human Services enters an exciting era of change as Patrick R. Maynard, PhD, takes hold of the reins as the organization’s new President/CEO.

In September 2011 Lorraine Kopczynski, the organization’s current President/CEO, announced her intent to retire after 25 years of service.  What ensued was a rapid, high profile search for the next leader of the county’s largest social service agency.

Under Kopczynski’s leadership the organization had undergone a metamorphosis, transitioning from a single-focus agency to a multi-faceted human services agency caring for the developmentally disabled, mentally ill, sexually assaulted, homeless and troubled youth and families.

“Her leadership and strong conviction has been instrumental in positioning Pioneer for many significant achievements over the years. Her passion and dedication for the organization, community, and especially the clients, has motivated and driven us all,” said Mike Moushey, Chairman of Pioneer Center’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Maynard, a current resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, will begin his transition to the McHenry County area over the next few months.  He will partner with Kopczynski during her last month at Pioneer Center to ensure a smooth and successful transition.

Dr. Maynard brings with him over 30 years of experience in developmental disabilities and non-profit leadership.  Most recently he was the President and CEO of Resident Home Corporation in Cincinnati.  There he led the creation of new programs, services and funding that grew the organization from 100 staff to over 275 staff and saw budget growth from $3.2 million to over $15 million. Judy Sampson Earns 2011 Market Managers Award

Judy Sampson from S&S Nursery & Garden Center was awarded the 2011 Market Manager's Award for her continued commitment to the Woodstock Farmer’s Market and participation on the Board. Judy became a vendor at the market during the summer of 1999. Her family had just started a Garden Center between Woodstock and Harvard. In February 2000, Judy joined the market advisory committee that assisted the Chamber of Commerce in running the market. She was on the committee for two years, 2000 and 2001.

Judy was the market manager for the years of 2002 and 2003.    By the fall of 2003, lots of things were changing. A corporation was formed to take over the running of the market. Judy was a vital part of that transformation and served as the first Treasurer in the years 2004 and 2005.

Those who have known and worked with Judy Sampson know how much she is devoted to the market and the many hours she has selflessly donated. In 2006, with health problems plaguing her family, Judy stepped down as Treasurer and declined the nomination to be on the board. Everyone understood why and respected her decision, but it is hard to keep a good person down.  Judy was elected back to the Treasurer position for the year of 2011 and was re-elected to serve in 2012

Keith Johnson, Market Manager stated, “It is with great personal satisfaction that I give the 2011 Woodstock Farmers Market Manager’s Award to Judy Sampson of S& S Garden Center.” This year she completed her 13th consecutive year as a vendor at the market.

Buschkopf Award Nominations Now Being Accepted

The Woodstock Chamber of Commerce & Industry is now accepting nominations for the annual Harold Buschkopf Community Service Award. The award is the Chamber’s highest honor accorded to an individual for distinguished community service.

The award, named in honor of late prominent Woodstock businessman Harold Buschkopf, will be presented at the Chamber’s Annual Dinner on February 9, 2012. Nominations must be on the official nomination form and must be received in the Chamber office by Friday, February 3, 2012. Buschkopf operated Buschkopf Pharmacy on the square for over 20 years.

The selection criteria for the award requires that the individual be known by many people or groups for having made a verifiable contribution to the quality of life in the greater Woodstock area whether or not that contribution has directly impacted the Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

It is necessary that the recipient’s generosity go beyond that of just providing funds for programs; the individual should have provided inspiration that will have also motivated other people to become involved in efforts to assist the community. The award winner should have been involved in positive community work for more than three years, thereby establishing a consistent pattern of public service.

Individuals may be nominated by relatives, co-workers, fellow organization members, friends, or simply those aware of his or her contributions. All nominations will remain confidential, but must be submitted on an official form which may be obtained from the Chamber of Commerce & Industry (136 Cass Street, Woodstock, IL 60098). The nomination form can also be downloaded from the Chamber’s website at www.woodstockilchamber.com.

Adult & Child Therapy Services has a variety of state-of-the-art equipment. One of these pieces of equipment includes the Biodex Balancer.  The Balancer provides clinical protocol to determine if clients are at risk of a fall.
