The City of Woodstock is encouraging the community’s participation in showing our holiday spirit to our service personnel stationed in Afghanistan.  City Staff is actively involved in making this effort part of the Lighting of the Square activities scheduled for Friday, November 29, 2019, from 5:00pm – 9:00pm throughout the downtown area.

Army National Guard Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment, who train and report to the facility in Woodstock, includes men and women from across northern Illinois, with a large number of the troops from Woodstock.  Working with the facility’s Family Readiness Group, donation boxes will be placed throughout town, encouraging specific items that have been requested by the soldiers. These items, posted on each box, include the following: DVDs, PS4 games, coffee, coffee filters, non-dairy creamers, protein powder, creatine powder, pre-workout powder, body wipes, tums, Febreeze spray, hanging air fresheners, bleach cleaning wipes, screws and nails and chisel sets for woodworking (please no food or gum).

The boxes will be set up at City Hall, Woodstock Public Library, Woodstock Recreation Center, and the Chamber of Commerce office, beginning on Monday, November 18th.  Items can be dropped off whenever these buildings are open through Sunday, December 1st, to be packaged and shipped to soldiers prior to the Christmas holiday.  Financial donations in the form of checks payable to Family Readiness Group are also gladly accepted.  As part of the retail support for this project, Casting Whimsy tea shop on Main Street is offering a “chari-tea” donation of $1 per cup of tea sold, from 2:00pm – 9:00pm on Friday, November 29th, to assist with shipping costs.

People can further show their support, during the City’s Lighting of the Square event, by signing the 4’x8’ long vinyl banner “Merry Christmas Card” that will be available in the Elf Escape family activity tent, on the east side of the Square, throughout the evening’s festivities, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm.
